Waving, Hollering, and Nearly 300 Bikes Registered on Bike Index: Recapping Our Registration Drive!

  • News

If you were cycling along the Bow River pathway past RiverWalk Plaza on October 4 or 5, you probably noticed a group of people waving, hollering, and gesturing for you to pull over.

No, it wasn’t a flash mob—it was Alberta Bike Swap, our amazing volunteers, and Calgary Police Service hosting our Bike Index Registration Drive!

And thanks to everyone who pulled over for five minutes, the event was a massive success: we officially registered nearly 300 bicycles over the two-day event!

Throughout the weekend, the conversations along the pathway fell into two distinct categories:

  1. The Procrastinators: “I bought this bike two years ago and kept telling myself I’d register it online…!”

  2. The Newly Informed: “What is Bike Index? You mean there’s a free global database that police use to return stolen bikes?”

We bridged that gap—making registration effortless while educating everyday cyclists on anti-theft protocols—is exactly why we do what we do as Alberta’s Bike Index Ambassadors.

A Massive Thank You

An event of this scale doesn’t happen without serious community teamwork. We want to extend our sincere gratitude to:

  • The Calgary Police Service: For joining us on the ground, engaging directly with citizens, and providing official, tamper-evident CPS frame decals for every registered ride.

  • East Village YYC: For hosting us at RiverWalk Plaza—one of the best, highest-volume pathway locations in the city!

  • Our Phenomenal Volunteers: Who logged serial numbers, inspected frames, guided riders through forms, and kept energy levels sky-high all weekend.

What’s Next?

Because this event was so energetic, informative, and impactful, the answer is simple: Yes, we will definitely be doing this more often!

If you missed us this time, don’t worry—you can still register your bike online anytime at Bike Index, or catch us at our next live registration clinic during Winter Bike Week in mid-February!

Thank you, Calgary, for coming out and helping us help others.

We glanced at other cyclist while cycle commuting in January 2005, spoke at the bike racks, and we’ve been together since.
