The Road to Red Deer: Our Strategic Alliance with the Optimists

  • News

When we say our volunteers are the heart of Alberta Bike Swap, we aren’t just talking about event day. Some of our most dedicated supporters travel across the province to ensure that every donated bike finds a second life. Our Strategic alliance with the Optimist Club of Red Deer is proof that community spirit knows no municipal boundaries.

From Volunteers to Partners: The Red Deer Optimists first joined us as volunteers during our Red Deer bike swap. They saw firsthand how our event secures a trustworthy public buy-and-sell space, and they recognized the massive potential of the bikes being donated on-site. Our Strategic alliance with the Optimist Club of Red Deer is a testament to the long-term relationships we build across the province. What began as a local volunteer effort at our Red Deer event has evolved into a dedicated partnership that keeps the Circular Economy moving between cities.

They didn’t stop at volunteering locally. Today, these dedicated members drive into Calgary to collect donated bikes from our Calgary swap to this day. They transport them back to Red Deer, where they personally rebuild and refurbish them. These bikes aren’t just being recycled; they are being restored to their former glory to provide safe, reliable transit for families in the Red Deer area.

At Alberta Bike Swap, Chris and Laura handle the heavy lifting of logistics, but we rely on groups that play nicely with others to ensure the Circular Economy reaches every corner of Alberta. The Red Deer Optimists embody the Optimist Creed, bringing out the best in youth and the community—one rebuilt bike at a time.

We glanced at other cyclist while cycle commuting in January 2005, spoke at the bike racks, and we’ve been together since.
