Building Alberta’s Cycling Future: 2026 CAN-BIKE Instructor Recruitment and Training

Alberta Bike Swap is excited to announce a focused push for cycling education in 2026. In partnership with Cycling Canada and Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA), we are looking to expand our province’s education delivery capacity by recruiting and training a new wave of certified instructors.

Unlocking the Power of the Bicycle While cycling infrastructure in Alberta continues to improve, the reality is that most journeys require navigating varied terrain to get to and from those dedicated paths. A trained cyclist is a confident cyclist—one who can truly unlock the power of the bicycle to go where they want, when they want. To make this a reality for more Albertans, we need more hands-on educators in our communities.

The Program: National Standards, Local Impact As the internationally recognized body for cycling in Canada, Cycling Canada oversees the CAN-BIKE program. They provide the standardized materials, certification, and expertise that ensure Albertans receive world-class instruction. This year, the ABA and Alberta Bike Swap are working together to identify experienced cyclists who are ready to transition from riders to mentors.

Investment in Our Instructors We are looking for experienced cyclists with a passion for teaching. To kickstart this initiative, we already have two candidates in Edmonton ready to begin. In a show of support for our future educators, Alberta Bike Swap has committed to paying the Level 5 Instructor Workshop fees for candidates who complete their Level 4 training.

2026 Course Schedule Please note that courses require a minimum of three students and are subject to weather conditions.

  • Calgary/Edmonton (TBD): September 19–20
• Level 5: Instructor Workshop (IWS)
  • Edmonton: June 12–14 OR 19-21 TBA
  • Calgary: TBA
• Level 3: Core Cycling Skills
  • A perfect opportunity for new instructors to present under supervision.
  • Edmonton: July 18
  • Calgary: August 8
