Innovation, Technology, Safety, CAN-BIKE cycling education, and Community: The Five Pillars of Alberta Bike Swap

  • News

When people first hear about Alberta Bike Swap, they often think of our high-volume annual consignment events. But behind the scenes, our daily operations are driven by software architecture, public safety protocols, and a world-wide network of strategic alliances.

We operate on five core pillars designed to protect cyclists, support active transit, and give back to our community:

  1. Technology

Behind our seamless event execution is our copyrighted Bicycle Swap Software that is custom-built and fit-for-purpose. We use data-driven verification systems to ensure that stolen bikes are identified, flagged, and kept off our event floors.

  1. Innovation

Operating with zero traditional administrative overhead from “Swap Central” (our kitchen table), we demonstrate how lean, purpose-driven social enterprises can deliver massive impact without bloated operational budgets.

  1. Safety

Every bicycle that enters an Alberta Bike Swap event undergoes physical and mechanical safety checks. We believe everyone deserves access to equipment that is safe, reliable, and properly audited before they hit the road or pathway.  We rejected ~15%.

  1. CAN-BIKE Cycling Education

Safety extends beyond the bicycle itself to the rider. Net proceeds from our events directly fund certified legitimate CAN-BIKE cycling safety education modules across Western Canada, equipping children, commuters, and new riders with essential road safety skills.

  1. Community Impact

Through our 106+ strategic alliances—including police services, municipal transit groups, and human service charities like Wood’s Homes YCAP and the Calgary Food Bank—donated equipment and event resources are continually redirected where they can generate the greatest social good.

We glanced at other cyclist while cycle commuting in January 2005, spoke at the bike racks, and we’ve been together since.
