Bicycles Change Lives: 400 Bikes to Zanzibar, Local Giveaways, and the Power of Partnership
Transportation security isn’t just about having safe pathways in Calgary—it’s a global necessity. Whether it’s helping a child ride to school in our own city or giving a health worker reliable transit in East Africa, a bicycle is one of the most transformative tools in the world.
This past week was deeply special for the Alberta Bike Swap team because we got to bring our grandchildren along to volunteer with Bicycles for Humanity (B4H) Calgary. Working alongside some of the absolute best people in the bike charity world, we helped pack a freight container loaded with nearly 400 bicycles, 150 maternity kits, and essential bike parts heading to Zanzibar!
Teaching the next generation that hands-on service can impact lives half a world away is something we will cherish for a long time.
Charities Supporting Charities
What makes Calgary’s bike community so special is how legitimate organizations quietly step up to help one another:
-
B4H Calgary x Kiwanis: When we mentioned that Calgary Chinook Kiwanis was short on bikes for their local youth giveaway, B4H immediately rounded up 29 bicycles to bridge the gap and make sure no child was left without a ride.
-
Bow Cycle’s Community Leadership: A massive shoutout to Bow Cycle for being such a supportive community partner. Brent from Bow Cycle is as hands-on as it gets—he was right there in the thick of it, packing the cargo container block by block. On top of that, Brent secured additional bikes for Two Wheel View to support their youth development programs.
When bike charities play well with others, the ripple effect reaches from our local pathways all the way across the globe. We have immense respect for the dedicated teams putting in the quiet work to support others without fanfare.
Thank you to B4H Calgary, Bow Cycle, Kiwanis, and Two Wheel View for another incredible week of making a real difference through bicycles!
