Helping More Cyclists Protect Their Bikes: Alberta Bike Swap Expands Bike Registration Events

At Alberta Bike Swap, we’ve always believed that trust is earned by doing what you say you’ll do.

Since our very first bike swap, we’ve worked hard to ensure every bicycle sold through our events is connected to its rightful owner, inspected for safety, and verified against stolen bicycle databases. Keeping stolen bikes out of our events isn’t just a process—it’s part of our promise to the cycling community.

Over the years, that commitment has grown beyond our bike swaps.

Through our Bicycle Swap Software, we’ve helped thousands of people register their new-to-them bicycles with Bike Index and Project 529. These free bicycle registration platforms give cyclists a much better chance of recovering their bikes if they’re ever stolen while also helping law enforcement identify rightful owners.

While Bike Index is the primary bicycle registration database used in Alberta, we also support Project 529 because cyclists regularly travel to our events from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and the United States. Bicycle theft doesn’t stop at provincial or international borders, and neither should bicycle registration.

Recently, members of the Calgary Police Service Bike Recovery Team took the time to thank us for helping thousands of cyclists register their bicycles. That recognition reinforced something we’ve believed all along: registering your bike is one of the simplest and most effective steps a cyclist can take to protect their investment.

That’s why we’re expanding our efforts.

With support by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Bike Theft Recovery, volunteers, and community organizations, we’re planning a series of free Bike Index registration and bicycle theft awareness events throughout Calgary.

Our vision is to host regular registration events along Calgary’s pathway system, at commuter cycling locations, and at community cycling events, making it easy for cyclists to register their bikes in just a few minutes while learning how to reduce the risk of theft.

Whether your bicycle is brand new, your daily commuter, or simply “new-to-you,” registration provides an important record of ownership that can make a real difference if your bike is ever lost or stolen.
