Steps, Superagers, and Safeguarding Our Streets: A Week in the Life of Alberta Bike Swap
At Alberta Bike Swap, people often see the numbers: thousands of bikes processed, tons of carbon emissions diverted, and a proprietary tech system built to protect the used bike market. But behind the logistics are the stories, the people, and the multi-generational energy that keeps us moving forward.
Making People Happy Through Specialized Mobility
This past week, we had the absolute privilege of donating a specialized tri-bike to Wildrose Women’s Events. When we loaded it up, we both shared the exact same thought: “This bike is going to make someone very happy.” Environmental stewardship and the circular economy are vital, but the heart of active transportation is human equity. Knowing that this bike will provide reliable, affordable, and joyful transportation to someone who truly needs it is an incredible honor that underscores our entire mission.
40,000 Steps and a 97-Year-Old “Superager”
People are often surprised to learn that we are senior citizens managing the massive physical footprint of these swap events. During a typical bike swap, we routinely track between 35,000 and 40,000 steps per event just keeping operations smooth, verified, and safe. And yes, Chris had a double bypass last year and only got out of the hospital from complications the day before Calgary Bike Swap.
But we always make time for family. We managed to pull Laura’s 97-year-old “superager” mother out of her garden long enough for a wonderful visit. While she might be deaf, her vibrant energy hasn’t faded a bit—she could likely still wobble circles around most 30-year-olds! Seeing her reminds us that active living and a passion for the outdoors keep us young at heart.
Elevating the Gold Standard of Cycling Education
On the education front, Chris was out in the community instructing a CAN-BIKE cycling safety course through the Beaumont Library. The library staff were fantastic hosts, even opening up the parameters to allow an incredibly keen young gal to take the course.
It is incredibly inspiring to see how many municipal libraries are stepping up to recognize the importance of legitimate, standardized cycling education. By training their permanent and summer staff through CAN-BIKE, these community hubs ensure that local infrastructure is navigated safely, predictably, and professionally.
Looking Ahead: The Mayor’s Environmental Expo
The momentum isn’t stopping anytime soon. This upcoming week is shaping up to be a spectacular celebration of sustainability. We will be surrounded by bikes, Calgary Climate Week, and an incredible cohort of eco-conscious citizens at the Mayor’s Environmental Expo.
Whether we are verifying bike ownership, cheering on other seniors, training summer staff, or keeping high-quality wheels out of landfills, our goal remains the same: building a stronger, healthier, and more connected community.
Thank you for riding alongside us this week. We’ll see you at #CalgaryClimateWeek!
