A Week in Our Life: Bikes, Community, Friendship, and a Lot of Good People

People ask us what Alberta Bike Swap does when we’re not running events.

The answer is simple:

We keep helping bikes find the right places and people.

Some weeks are especially good reminders of why we’ve spent years doing this work.

This past week was one of those weeks.

Helping Put a 10,000th Bike into a Container Bound for Malawi

For years we’ve had the opportunity to support and work alongside Bicycles for Humanity Calgary (B4H – Calgary).

This week we helped with something special—their 10,000th bike being loaded into a shipping container headed to Malawi.

There is something powerful about seeing thousands of bikes gathered together and knowing each one represents mobility, opportunity, independence, and possibility.

Every donated bike carries a story from here and creates a new story somewhere else.

That kind of impact doesn’t happen by accident. It takes volunteers, organizers, mechanics, donors, logistics, and people willing to believe that something as simple as a bicycle can make a difference.

Celebrating Another 10,000-Bike Milestone Close to Home

At the same time, we also had the opportunity to help support another incredible milestone.

For years we’ve worked with Kiwanis Chinook and celebrated as they connected their 10,000th bike with a youth who needed one.

That number represents so much more than bicycles.

It means rides to school.
Freedom.
Confidence.
Belonging.
A first experience of independence.

Watching organizations reach milestones like this reminds us that community impact is built one bike and one relationship at a time.

Helping a Great Bike Find Its Next Chapter

Not every meaningful moment involves big numbers.

One of our favourite stories this week involved helping find a new owner for a beautiful triathlon bike package complete with carrying case and two additional wheel sets.

Its owner, now in his 90s, decided his racing years had come to a close.

That bike had lived a full life.

Rather than sitting unused, it now gets another chapter with someone who will create new memories and adventures.

We love these moments because they remind us that bikes connect generations.

Rebuilding Bikes for Women Moving Forward

We also spent time rebuilding donated bicycles supporting #HerVictory and Not In My City.

These projects matter deeply to us because transportation can remove barriers and create access—to work, school, services, community, and confidence.

Sometimes a rebuilt bike becomes much more than transportation.

Sometimes it becomes momentum.

What This Week Reminded Us

People often think the bike world is all competition.

But our experience has been that some of the most meaningful things happen when organizations collaborate.

This week was full of bikes.
Love.
Friendship.
Generosity.
Shared goals.
And wonderful charities and community groups that play nicely together.  We missed you #bowcycle

That’s the kind of cycling community we want to keep building.

Next Stop: Calgary Climate Week

We’re also looking forward to Calgary Climate Week, where Chris will be speaking about CAN-BIKE and the role cycling education plays alongside engineering and community investment.

Because safer, more accessible cycling doesn’t come from one solution alone.

It comes from people working together.

Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, shared a connection, rebuilt a bike, loaded a container, passed along a story, or simply believed that bikes can make communities stronger.
